Infatti, "I can't Feel at Home in this World Anymore" nella versione delle Two Gospel Keys era il brano che i miei genitori mi suonavano come ninna nanna per addormentarmi.
Era tratto da uno di quei formidabili LP della Folkways, che hanno fatto la storia della nostra Musica: si chiamava "Jazz Vol. 1: The South" e ancora lo conservo con cura.
The Two Gospel Keys erano due arzille signore che, con chitarra e tamburello, si esibivano come street singer, cantando le lodi al Signore e testimoniando così la propria fede.
Ma oggi voglio lasciare la parola a Moses Asch -il fondatore della Folkways- e riportare per intero ciò che egli scrisse nella presentazione di queste due artiste, nell'anno 1950.
Consapevole che, di dischi così, oggi non se ne fanno più.
"The Two Gospel Keys, Mother Jones and her Partner Emma Daniel, are itinerant street singers now in their sixties, whom you might meet in the crowded negro section of any metropolitan city.
As singers on the road and as singers for the Church of God in Christ their repertoire, sung to the accompaniment of guitar and tambourine, recalls Spirtuals some of which date from slave days.
In the synthesis of such music, which reflects the influences of hymn tunes, there are thrilling examples of the germinating force of african elements, both in the stirring, curiously woven harmonies and in the spirited rhythms.
